Donations

Postby wizzard » June 26th, 2005, 1:12 am

In case you hadn't noticed, we have a PayPal Donate link on the top right of the forum. Although I own this server, there are various costs of running this forum, so any donations would be appreciated. We do realise that most of the users can't afford to pour a fortune into the forum though, so this is purely if you want to show your appreciation and help out a little.

Thanks,
Martin

You know, you are probably the person who puts the most time into this forum - I really didn't expect you to make a donation. I really didn't want to make anyone feel that they had to.

People may be wondering what these donations are going to be used for. Well, we are putting them away in a separate account for the moment, and we might eventually do things like run competitions for TP books and stuff. I did say that I was going to use them for paying for server costs and stuff, and I'm not promising that I wont ever, but at the moment, it seems like a nicer idea to use them to do nice stuff for the members.

What does everyone think?

Martin
p.s. I'm probably going to be setting up a system to track donations, so that people who have donated can be identified, and you can see how much they have donated. There is also a possibility that donors will have access to new features that other members don't, and donors' opinions will generally be given more weight than others in decisions.

We are probably going to be introducing other ways of supporting The Watch House, including buying stuff from Amazon through us.

PayPal is perfectly safe. The hacker did not get access to any passwords or sensitive information. All they managed to do was to make use of a bug in the phpBB code which allowed them to gain Administrator priveliges on the boards, which is how they deleted all the posts and posted up a hacked message. I've patched that up now, and it shouldn't happen again. The hacker did not even get access to the web server, it was purely the messageboard, and that was only as much access as a board administrator has. Also, I went through the server logs, and I can see roughly what they did, and there isn't anything to worry about now.

By the way, if you donate, please let me know who you are as I can't necessarily identify your Watch House ID from PayPal. Also, please let me know if you want your donations kept secret.

that would be ideal, I don't earn a great deal at the moment but I do occasional get books through amazon, so donating that way would be much more feasable.

I keep saying - don't feel guilty for not donating. I don't expect people to - it is only if you want to.

Would love to donate, but Paypal is difficult when your account is in one country and you are in another! Is there another way? I use Amazon, so doing something through them would be a possibility.

I guess bank transfer or something would also work. Or any of the other payment methods that are usually around - let me know what is convenient and I'll give you the details.
